This means that where it can take minutes to spin up a virtual machine, it can take seconds to start a container because you aren’t having to fire up the OS as well.This is beneficial for massive distributed applications with lots of discrete parts that need to be summoned, run, and then killed in short order. It’s also much more efficient from a CPU utilization perspective, which matters if you’re an IT-focused organization like Google.The main tradeoff with the approach is in security, because if someone can break out of a container and modify the underlying Linux OS, they can own all other containers on the system, whereas virtualization prevents this type of contamination.

Ubuntu, Debian, and CentOS are also supporting the Docker format, but Red Hat is using Docker as the cornerstone of a project inside OpenStack — Project Solom — as a way to build, test, migrate, and deploy workloads to the OpenStack cloud, such as HP’s or Rackspace’s, or clouds built by its own customers. Red Hat executive VP and CTO Brian Stevens said Red Hat is working on its Atomic version of Red Hat Enterprise Linux, which will be optimized to run a Docker system and Docker containers.

BTW, the founder of Docker is also credited with formulating the CAP theorem.

That the theorem is also called Brewer’s theorem – and the founder of Docker is the same guy – Eric Brewer. Google is embracing Docker.
